Abstract
Many features of storm sediments may indicate ancient water depth, but also the restoration of the ancient climate. Analysis of sedimentary basins and restoration of palaeogeography are of practical significance, especially in judging the continental tectonic nature and background. Base on the outcrop measurement, sampling and indoor identification to Upper Cambrian Sanshanzi Formation at the Baiwaping tempestite outcrop in zhongyang, Shanxi province, sedimentary facies markers that include petrology, paleontology and sedimentary structures of Sanshanzi tempestite are studied and recognized. The tempestite is characterized by allogenic and proximal storm sedimentation and develops ditch structures formed by bottom erosion. Comprehensive study suggests that the regional sedimentary environment of Sanshanzi Formation is the open platform to the restricted platform rather than the dolostone tidal flat that the previous scholars has regarded as.
